Sure people will die twice, thrice over—first in random violence, then in the state violence that supposedly remedies the random violence, and then in the necessary next round of state violence that happens when people notice that the state violence keeps missing it’s target—but who fucking cares? The nation is bigger than a few dead people, freedom isn’t free and pay no attention to how it’s not actually freedom.
People who are frightened and uncertain will give up a lot for a sense of stability, so every time people experience fright and uncertainty, shoehorn in the thing you already want as a solution. People that are wounded are pliable, especially when offered not only catharsis, but a framework in which their catharsis is heroic and just, so it’s a very simple process to spitshine state violence—and, you know, the theft of commonwealth to maintain a permanent enforcer class that just, coincidentally, does a lot of redistributing wealth upward—if you can present it as retaliation. If you’re planning to build or maintain a giant machine that just constantly inflicts little bits of violence, the best way to justify this is to present that the only alternative is vivid, personal violence that will arrive at your doorstep.
And people get used to this formula, so repetition isn’t a negative: ideally, you can just build it into the culture that life is suffering tempered by the state granting you violent treats; people will under their own power adopt the affectation that they are sheepdogs and those that question the cycle of violence are sheep, and everybody that got hacked up with a machete must have been a wolf.

I want to push back on the discussion of suicide from the last thread. From my reading, nearly everyone who kills themself is depressed. People who aren’t depressed usually decide to hang in there, even of they are in constant pain or are terminal.
And depression lies to you. Your brain doesn’t work right when you are depressed. Once you aren’t depressed anymore you are glad you are alive.
So the idea that people have the right to kill themselves, or it falls under bodily autonomy is too simplistic I think. If people are in their right minds and have given careful thought that is different. But that isn’t most suicides.

I found a thread at Reddit about setting Ublock Origin to stop some of YouTube’s ads.
First open Ublock’s Dashboard page with the gear icon, go to “My Filters,” add these four lines and “Apply Changes”:

youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0)
youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, [])
youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)
Then go to “Filter Lists” and click “Purge All Caches” and “Update Now.”
This seems to have worked, although I’m still seeing the short ads at the start of some videos. Which is actually bearable.

Could be an AI with the same biases as the person who trained it. AI is not an objective reviewer of information. It does not have its own point of view, but is given one to have.

You worked with software, so you know that they could have built their systems to not push the majority culture onto people who are not interested in those things, but it sounds like they did not do so. You’ve got ‘Murika in your face.
If I have to look at wingnut stuff on YouTube, I use an incognito Chrome tab to do it.

Hasn’t there been previous evidence that algorithms can “learn” from what they “observe” and so even if the original programmer has the best of intentions, AI can learn a totally different lesson just by hanging around and seeing how others behave.

Considering the amount of time I spend on Youtube using multiple platforms and the extremely low tolerance I have for video ads, I just pay for Youtube premium. Haven’t seen an ad in 7 years. I have no patience trying to figure out blockers. Or anything, really.

Time to Get Serious About Unleaded Fuel
The general aviation industry expected last week’s release from the Environmental Protection Agency of the endangerment finding on leaded avgas. Thanks to a number of factors—including recent codification of leaded fuel reduction plans under the EAGLE (Eliminate Aviation Gas Lead Emissions) coalition—it feels like the finding was welcomed rather than feared.
Because of the way the U.S. government operates, particularly under the Clean Air Act of 1970, certain processes within the associated agencies, including the FAA, could not begin without the finding.
Endangerment finding:
EPA Determines that Lead Emissions from Aircraft Engines Cause or Contribute to Air Pollution
Btw, I am still grounded but my ophthomologist and I are very optimistic that I can get back to flying when my cataract surgery is done.
